Complete Door Handle Set Guide: Types, Finishes, and Tips
A door handle set is not automatically a complete locking system. Before ordering, confirm the number of handles, the keyhole or privacy option, the spindle and fixings, and whether the latch, lock and cylinder are included. This guide explains how to specify a compatible set for a replacement door or a project schedule.

What is included in a door handle set?
The product description and selected variant determine the contents. A photograph showing a handle, keyhole cover and door does not confirm that every component is supplied. Check the following items against the quotation:

For example: choosing “without keyhole escutcheon” does not mean “without a handle rose”. It removes the separate keyhole-cover option; the handle assembly and the locking arrangement still need to be specified.
Yale, Patent, WC or without escutcheon: which option fits?
- Yale / euro-profile cylinder: choose a matching cylinder-shaped escutcheon when the door has that lock format. The word “Yale” in an Italian hardware option describes the opening; it does not by itself specify a cylinder brand or security rating.
- Patent / keyhole: this is the traditional keyhole option, often identified as BB in technical drawings. Compare the actual key and lock opening with the drawing before ordering.
- WC / privacy: for a bathroom or privacy arrangement, confirm the compatible thumbturn, emergency release and lock, including the privacy spindle. Availability and package contents depend on the model.
- Without keyhole escutcheon: appropriate when no separate keyhole cover is needed. Confirm whether the door uses a latch-only arrangement or another locking solution.

Choose the handle type for the door mechanism
- Lever handles: operate a compatible latch or lock through a spindle. Check the lock’s spring requirements, fixing clearance and lever orientation.
- Knobs: establish whether the knob is fixed or rotating. A fixed knob does not operate a latch in the same way as a turning handle.
- Pull handles: provide a grip for pulling a door. Specify the latch, locking and closing arrangements separately, and confirm the fixing method for the door material.
- Flush handles: sit within a recess, commonly on sliding doors. Check the recess dimensions, door construction and any matching sliding-door lock.
For a closer comparison, read door knobs versus door levers. For entrance doors, agree the complete door-and-lock specification with the door supplier; the decorative handle alone does not establish the security performance.
Measure these details before replacing a handle
- Door thickness: measure the finished door, including any cladding that affects spindle length or fixing bolts.
- Spindle size and engagement: record the square cross-section and the required length. Do not assume that every door uses the same spindle.
- Backset: measure from the door edge to the centre of the spindle. Check the lock drawing before changing the latch or lock.
- Handle-to-keyhole centres: record the distance between the spindle and keyhole or privacy-turn centres, particularly for a backplate replacement.
- Rose footprint and fixing holes: compare the existing holes and marks with the new hardware’s dimensions and installation method.
- Door swing and clearance: check the lever’s relationship to the frame, adjacent wall and other hardware. Confirm handing where required by the selected product.
Useful photographs show both faces of the door, the handle removed if practical, the door edge and any lock markings. A supplier can then check the specification against a technical drawing rather than match the handle by appearance alone.
Compare the material and the exact finish code
Material and finish are different specifications. A stainless-steel-coloured finish does not necessarily mean a solid stainless-steel handle. Olivari, for example, describes IS SuperStainlessSteel satin as a PVD finish in its official finish guide.
Record the manufacturer’s finish code on the order, not just “gold”, “bronze” or “black”. Check that the selected finish is available on the exact model and on any matching escutcheons or accessories. For humid, coastal or outdoor locations, ask for the manufacturer’s guidance for that finish and exposure; do not treat all chrome, brass or stainless-steel products as interchangeable.
Compare physical finish samples when colour matching matters. Follow the care instructions supplied for the selected finish rather than applying a cleaning product intended for another surface.

Prepare a door-by-door hardware schedule. For each door type, list:
- door reference, quantity, material and finished thickness;
- handle manufacturer, model and exact finish code;
- pair, single or half-handle requirement and any handing;
- Yale, Patent, WC or no-escutcheon option;
- latch or lock reference, cylinder or privacy components, spindle and fixing requirements;
- required delivery destination and project date.

Does a door handle set include the lock?
Only if the product listing or quotation explicitly includes it. Confirm the latch or lock, cylinder, strike and privacy components separately from the decorative handle assembly.
Can I fit a new handle to my existing lock?
Check the spindle, door thickness, fixing pattern, spring requirements and keyhole arrangement against the new handle’s drawing. Matching the colour or rose diameter alone is insufficient.
Is “without escutcheon” the same as a single handle?
No. The escutcheon option concerns the separate keyhole cover. Pair, single and half-handle quantities are a different part of the specification.
Which finish should I choose for a coastal project?
Start with the exact model, finish code and exposure conditions. Ask for the manufacturer’s suitability and care guidance, and confirm the available finish on all coordinated components.
