Luxury Door Knobs: Are They Really Worth the Price?
Luxury door knobs can be worth the extra cost when the design, operating function, finish and component quality answer a specific project need. A higher price alone does not establish better security, a longer service life or an increase in property value. Compare the exact specification and what is included in the quotation.

What are you paying for in a designer door knob?
The price may reflect the design, manufacturing and surface treatment, as well as the fixing arrangement and supplied components. A carefully proportioned knob can be an important detail on a prominent entrance or a repeated element across an interior. Its value is strongest when those details support the wider design and the hardware works correctly on the door.
Compare like for like: a single fixed half knob is not the same purchase as a pair of rotating knobs with roses and spindle. A decorative knob also does not replace the lock body, cylinder or any required door-security hardware.
Five specification checks before comparing prices
| Check | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|
| Operating function | Is this a fixed pull, a rotating knob, a single component or a pair? |
| Base material | What is the underlying material, separately from the finish colour? |
| Finish | What is the exact manufacturer finish code and intended environment? |
| Compatibility | Do the spindle, fixings and dimensions suit the door and lock? |
| Scope of supply | Which roses, escutcheons and fixings are included, and what is separate? |
Start with the door knob collection, then compare the chosen versions rather than the lowest displayed price for a variable product.
Material and finish are different decisions
A bronze-coloured knob is not necessarily made from solid bronze, and a stainless-steel-coloured surface does not establish a stainless steel body. Confirm both the substrate and the surface treatment in the manufacturer’s specification.
For example, Olivari’s finish guide identifies IS SuperStainlessSteel satin as a PVD finish with a stainless-steel colour. It also distinguishes chrome, PVD and powder-coated finishes. These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable material names.
Obtain a sample for colour and sheen approval, especially where knobs must match levers, hinges or cabinet hardware. Specify the finish code in the order. Confirm suitability for external exposure or intensive use and read the applicable care and guarantee conditions; no finish should be assumed scratch-proof or suitable for every location.
Choose the function before the appearance
A fixed knob is used as a grip, while a rotating version can operate a compatible latch. The lock and door configuration determine what is needed on each side. Check hand clearance around the knob, the existing door preparation and whether the supplied fixing method is suitable.
If ease of operation is a priority, compare the knob with a lever on a representative door. Read our door knobs vs. door levers guide for the functional differences, and the door handle set guide for measurements and package contents.
Maintenance: follow the instructions for the exact finish
Do not apply a generic polishing, waxing or oiling routine to every premium knob. Coated and plated surfaces can need different care from uncoated metal, and a cleaner suitable for one product may damage another.
Olivari’s cleaning and maintenance instructions warn that unsuitable polishing products, abrasives or alcohol can attack the protective surface. They specify periodic cleaning with a water-moistened cloth for Superfinish-treated products. Consult the document for its treatment of deposits and intensive or external use, and confirm any cleaning product with the supplier before application.
Keep the relevant care sheet with the project handover documents. Use wax, silicone sprays, metal polish or lubricant only where the instructions for the exact finish and mechanism permit them. For other brands, follow their own guidance rather than transferring Olivari’s instructions automatically.
When is the additional cost justified?
A premium knob can be a sensible choice where the design will be closely seen and touched, a specific finish is needed, or coordinated hardware is important across many doors. Compare the sample’s grip and finish with the intended door and the rest of the scheme.
It may be unnecessary where the design brief can be met by a simpler compatible product. Evaluate the complete installed cost, including the correct components and any changes to the door preparation. Treat long-term replacement savings as a project estimate, not a guaranteed consequence of buying a more expensive knob.
Build a clear project quotation
List the model, fixed or rotating version, single or paired configuration, finish code, door thickness, lock details and quantities. Add the destination and any required date so the proposed scope and delivery can be checked. Availability and lead time should be confirmed for the selected configuration.

Frequently asked questions
Does an expensive door knob make a door more secure?
Price or appearance alone does not establish security performance. The lock, cylinder, door construction and installation need to be specified as a complete arrangement.
Can brass-coloured hardware be polished with metal polish?
Do not decide from the colour. Check whether the surface is uncoated, plated, lacquered or otherwise treated, then follow the exact product’s care instructions.
Should I order one knob or a pair?
That depends on the door configuration. Confirm which components are required on each side and whether the product listing is for a single knob, half set or pair.
